This working paper explores Lao PDR’s remarkable goods export growth from 2010 to 2021 despite its geographical disadvantages as a landlocked country. Using the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage methodology, the paper analyzes Lao PDR’s export competitiveness at the detailed Standard International Trade Classification four-digit product level. The findings show that Lao PDR has increasingly exported competitive goods, primarily in lower-value-added groups such as food and live animals, beverages and tobacco, crude materials, and minerals and fuels. However, the economy’s export competitiveness remains fragile even within these sectors. To navigate the complex global trade landscape, Lao PDR needs a well-thought-out export promotion strategy. This paper also provides preliminary policy insights and aims to spark strategic discussions on sustaining and enhancing Lao PDR’s export growth trajectory.
