In the ASEAN+3 region, remittances in low-income developing economies such as Myanmar are vital, given the country’s socio-economic challenges. Over the past half-century, Myanmar has become the largest migration source country in the Mekong subregion, thereby creating a significant flow of remittances. Together with the pressing socio-economic challenges, where 49.7 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, remittances continue to play a vital role in contributing to poverty alleviation and safeguarding social stability. This analytical note provides an overview as well as the recent remittances developments in Myanmar post-COVID-19, taking into account recent policy and regulatory shifts; and assesses the outlook and key challenges ahead.
