Mr. Dek Joe Sum joined AMRO in June 2023 and currently serves as Economist in the Fiscal Surveillance Group, covering China and Malaysia.
Before joining AMRO, he served as Macroeconomic Advisor at the Asian Development Bank and provided technical assistance on developing macro-fiscal frameworks to the Department of Treasury of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Mr. Sum played a key role in shaping the government’s policy response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public financial management reforms. He also advised the PNG authorities on the IMF financing program in 2022 and 2023.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Sum was an associate lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU). He also provided consultancy to the Government of PNG and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the development of the banking sector in the Pacific, as well as served as the lead researcher of PNG’s Independent Advisory Group for the review of the Central Banking Act 2000.
Mr. Sum holds a Master’s degree in International and Development Economics, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from ANU.
