Mr. Dek Joe Sum joined AMRO in June 2023 as an associate economist in the fiscal surveillance group, specializing in China and Malaysia.
Before AMRO, he was a Macroeconomic Advisor at the Asian Development Bank and provided technical assistance to the Department of Treasury of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in developing frameworks for macroeconomic analysis and forecasting. His technical expertise on fiscal issues helped PNG in a range of areas covering pandemic response, budget formulation and monitoring, medium-term fiscal framework and public financial management. He also advised the PNG authorities in developing an IMF financing program in 2022 and 2023.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Sum was an associate lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU). He also offered consultancy to the Government of PNG and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was the lead researcher of PNG’s Independent Advisory Group on the review of the Central Banking Act 2000.
Mr. Sum holds a Master’s degree in International and Development Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from ANU.
