Fan Zhai is a Senior Economist at the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO). He is AMRO’s desk economist for Hong Kong, China and back-up economist for China.
Prior to joining AMRO, he was a consultant at CICC Capital, the direct investment arm of China International Capital Corporation (CICC) and a senior advisor at Everglory Group. From 2009 to 2016 he held several senior positions at the China Investment Corporation (CIC), including Chief Representative of its New York Representative Office as well as Managing Director and Head of the Asset Allocation and Strategic Research Department. At CIC he was responsible for overall asset allocation strategy and total portfolio management of CIC’s overseas investment, and oversaw macroeconomic research and market analysis.
Before joining CIC, he was a Research Fellow at the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo and an economist at the Economics and Research Department of the Asian Development Bank in Manila. He also worked in the Ministry of Finance and the Development Research Center of the State Council in China. He has published articles in journals such as the Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Asian Economics, and Economic Modelling. He and his co-authors were awarded the Sun Yefang Prize in 2002, the highest biennial award for economists in China. Mr. Zhai holds a Ph.D. in systems engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China.
