Anthony Tan

Deputy Group Head and Senior Economist

Mr. Anthony Tan is Deputy Group Head and Principal Economist at AMRO. He leads the macroeconomic and financial surveillance of member economies, including issues related to the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation (CMIM). As one of AMRO’s pioneering staff, Mr. Tan joined the organization in 2011 at its inception.

Since then, Mr. Tan has played a key role in various assignments. From 2011 to 2018, he was the lead author of the conjunctural chapter of the ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook (AREO). During this time, he also served as an economist on several country teams, covering major economies such as China, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Brunei, and Myanmar.

From 2019 to 2021, Mr. Tan was seconded to the Regional Studies Division of the Asia and Pacific Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he contributed to analytical chapters of the IMF’s Regional Economic Outlook and served as senior desk for Brunei. Upon returning to AMRO, he led the Brunei, Myanmar and Vietnam country teams.

Prior to AMRO, Mr. Tan worked in the Economics Department of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), specializing in macroeconomic surveillance and research on global and domestic economies.

He has authored several departmental papers while he was with the BNM, as well as journal articles and book chapters published in the Hitotsubashi Journal of Economics, SEACEN, Bretton Woods: The Next 70 Years, MAS Macroeconomic Review, and various AMRO and IMF thematic studies and working papers.

Mr Tan holds a Master’s degree (with Distinction) from the University of Malaya in Malaysia and a Bachelor’s degree (Hons) from the London School of Economics in the UK.
