Dr. Sungtaek Kwon joined AMRO in July 2021 as a secondee from the Bank of Korea (BOK). At AMRO, he is a Senior Economist in the country surveillance team covering Korea and Vietnam.

Previously, he was a Senior Economist at BOK’s Research Department. As part of the Overall Research & Forecasting Team and the Economic Trend Analysis Team, his main responsibilities focused on the surveillance of the Korean and global economies, as well as contributing to the BOK’s quarterly economic forecasts and reports on key macroeconomic issues to the BOK’s Executives and Monetary Policy Committee members.

Dr. Kwon has been involved in a wide range of economic and policy-oriented research, notably producing Korea’s GDP forecasts and key policy reports to the Korea’s President and the Chief Secretary for Economy. He has participated in policymaking across a wide range of economic and financial issues, particularly providing fiscal and monetary policy support during the Covid-19 pandemic. He has also worked in the Governor’s Secretariat, Financial Market Department, and International Department of BOK.

Dr. Kwon holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Goethe University Frankfurt and a Bachelor’s in Economics from Seoul National University.
