The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) is seeking a qualified and motivated Economist to join its Regional Surveillance Group.
The Regional Surveillance Group is primarily responsible for developing region-wide macroeconomic outlooks and risk assessments for the region in collaboration with country surveillance groups. The group also identifies and analyzes key long-term structural trends and challenges facing the ASEAN+3 economies. This work directly feeds into AMRO’s flagship publication, the ASEAN+3 Regional Economic Outlook (AREO).
The successful candidate should have a good understanding of macroeconomics and development economics, with particular expertise in longer-term structural issues relevant to the ASEAN+3 region. Knowledge of ASEAN+3 economies and experience in development-oriented research are essential. The role also requires excellent communication and coordination skills to work effectively across teams and stakeholders.
Job Responsibilities:
- Support the Group Head in the planning and implementation of the group’s work plan in support of AMRO’s overall goals, ensuring efficiency, relevance and impact of AMRO’s surveillance work.
- Be responsible for conducting surveillance of the region including:
- collecting data, monitoring and analyzing regional developments.
- monitoring and analyzing extra-regional major economies and major emerging markets economies.
- identifying risks and vulnerabilities in the global economy and global financial markets and implications for the member economies of AMRO, and developing policy options to deal with them, in close collaboration with the relevant internal teams, member authorities and broader stakeholders as necessary.
- preparing initial drafts of flagship reports and other monthly or quarterly reports.
- Conduct research on long-term structural issues relevant to ASEAN+3 economies, such as trade and global value chain, population aging, technology and economic development, productivity and long-term growth, under the guidance of the Group Head.
- Contribute to country, cross-country, and sectoral surveillance activities of other ASEAN+3 economies as assigned.
- Collect and manage data from the ASEAN+3 authorities, IFIs, private sectors, and other data sources.
- Guide Associate Economists and Research Analysts.
- Maintain good relations with the authorities and liaise with the authorities on all surveillance matters between AMRO and the member economies.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Group Head or Senior Management.
Institutional Responsibilities:
- Participate in any institution-wide activity, such as AMRO’s internal committees or task forces, as assigned.
- Facilitate training/seminars/workshops to disseminate knowledge to AMRO staff and external stakeholders.
- Perform any other duty as may be reasonably required in furtherance of AMRO’s overall goals.
The candidate should possess:
- A PhD or Master’s degree in economics or related fields from a reputable university.
- At least 5 years of relevant work experience and knowledge in economics and/or finance; experience in development finance institutions or similar development-focused organizations is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of ASEAN+3 economies and policies; experience in development economics, trade economics, labor economics, or other related areas, particularly as applied to the region, would be a significant advantage.
- Proven analytical ability and capacity to conduct rigorous research.
- Familiarity with economics and finance databases, such as Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics, Refinitiv Datastream; experience with trade databases (UN Comtrade, OECD TiVA, etc.) and development indicators would be beneficial.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and econometric packages, such as EViews, Stata; programming skills in MATLAB, Python and R are a plus.
- High motivation and initiative, with strong attention to accuracy and detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, coordination, and communication skills in a multicultural environment.
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) is essential; knowledge of other regional languages is an advantage.
