The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) has vacancies in the Macro-Financial Research Group (MFR) for Senior Economist/Economist/Associate Economist positions. MFR economists are primarily responsible for undertaking rigorous research on structural issues affecting the growth and financial stability of AMRO’s member economies, to support AMRO’s surveillance mandate. The successful candidates will report to the head of MFR.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct macro-financial research activities by participating in assigned projects and capacity-building activities that focus on structural areas of interest and priority to members, such as financial digitalization/fintech/AI; trade and supply chain reconfiguration; climate change risks and sustainable/green finance; population aging, and any other topical macro-financial issues; and undertake systemic risk analyses.
  • Contribute to research projects by extracting, organizing, distilling, and analyzing data (including “big data”) from a variety of sources, undertaking econometric and other quantitative work and producing analytical reports.
  • Collaborate with other AMRO teams to develop macro-financial scenarios, model them, and analyze their potential impact on economic activity and financial stability; build relevant tools, frameworks, and research infrastructure.
  • Participate in country surveillance missions as assigned, monitoring, and analyzing developments at both country and sectoral levels; identifying risks and vulnerabilities facing the country and formulating policy analyses and providing suggestions on how to implement them; participating in annual consultation and interim visits and contributing to drafts of country consultation reports; providing regular updates to his/her mission chief on emerging events and issues in the country.
  • Undertake any other assignment required by supervisor or Senior Management.


Institutional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in any institution-wide activity, such as AMRO’s internal committees or task forces, as assigned.
  • Lead and conduct training/seminars/workshops to disseminate knowledge to AMRO staff and external stakeholders.
  • Perform any other duty as may be reasonably required in furtherance of AMRO’s overall goals.


The candidate should possess:

  • A postgraduate, preferably PhD degree, in economics, finance, or relevant fields from a reputable university; knowledge about modeling using artificial intelligence techniques would be a distinct advantage.
  • Intensive research and modeling experience, with keen interest in economic and financial sector research, particularly in priority areas listed above, and a track record of publications in recognized refereed academic journals.
  • Familiarity with ASEAN+3 economies and financial systems, a solid understanding of macro-financial risk relationships, and ability to pivot quickly to analyzing topical areas relevant to regional growth and financial stability would be a huge plus.
  • Work experience at policy institutions, such as a central bank, think tank, and/or international organization would be a significant advantage.
  • High proficiency in software applications, such as Microsoft Office, and in programming languages such as R, Python, or Matlab, as well as econometric packages, such as Stata and/or EViews, is essential.
  • Strong familiarity with key third-party economics and finance databases, such as Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics is a must; experience with more specialized databases such as Bankfocus, Orbis, IHS Markit Global Trade Atlas would be a huge plus; ability to process and analyze big data is strongly preferred.
  • Strong motivation and willingness to take initiative and accountability for the accuracy of both data and analyses; demonstrated team spirit with strong negotiation and communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues and officials from diverse cultures and backgrounds; flexibility, adaptability, versatility, and readiness to expand skillset to meet evolving research and surveillance needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly and concisely to both expert and non-technical audiences.
  • High proficiency in written and spoken English.
