Junko Shimizu

Professor of Economics, Gakushuin University (Guest Blogger)

Dr Junko Shimizu is a Professor of International Finance at Gakushuin University. She started her career as a FX dealer in 1982 and has worked at Chase Manhattan Bank, Industrial Bank of Japan, Security Pacific National Bank, Bank of America International, and Morgan Stanley. She started her academic career at Hitotsubashi University in 2004, and has taught at Gakushuin University since 2012. She has also served for the government at various positions including as a council member of Tariff and Foreign Exchange Council Meeting, Ministry of Finance (since 2007) and a member of Investment Committee at the Government Pension Investment Fund (2014 – 2017).

Professor Shimizu has conducted research related to invoicing currency and foreign exchange rate risk management of Japanese firms. Her works have been published in international economic journals and cited in white papers in Japan. She has accumulated a large amount of firm-level survey data of Japanese firms, which are disclosed in her latest book “Managing Currency Risk: How Japanese Firms Choose Invoicing Currency” (Edward Elgar) in 2018.  She has also conducted research on Asian local currency usage for trade invoicing and served a collaboration research at the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) from September 2017 to February 2018.

She received her BA in Economics and MA and PhD in Commerce, all from Hitotsubashi University in Japan.
