The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) has a vacancy in the Macro-Financial Research Group (MFR) for an Associate Economist.
The ideal candidate should be versatile in various aspects of macro-financial analysis and frameworks. S/he should have a strong macroeconomics/finance background, with experience in economic modelling and show evidence of relevant research publications. The successful candidate will report to the head of MFR.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct macro-financial research activities by participating in assigned projects and capacity-building activities.
- Contribute to the development of macro-financial research infrastructure and surveillance frameworks.
- Contribute to analyses of structural issues of interest to members, such as financial digitalization; trade and supply chain reconfiguration; climate change risks and sustainable/green finance, and other topical macro-financial issues; undertake systemic risk analysis.
- Contribute to research projects by extracting, organizing, distilling, and analyzing data (including “big data”) from a variety of sources, undertaking econometric and other quantitative work, implementing machine learning techniques, and so forth, and producing analytical reports.
- Help to program own models in appropriate languages for implementation as automated, interactive analytical tools and their visualizations on ARTEMIS, AMRO’s macro-financial surveillance tools and database platform.
- Participate in country surveillance as assigned, including collecting data, monitoring, and analyzing developments at both country and sectoral levels; identifying risks and vulnerabilities facing the country, and formulating policy analyses and providing suggestions on how to implement them; contributing to briefing notes for management and annual consultation and interim visits; participating in annual consultations and contributing to drafts of country consultation reports; providing regular updates to his/her mission chief on emerging events and issues in the country.
- Undertake any other assignment assigned by the supervisor or Senior Management.
Institutional Responsibilities:
- Participate in any institution-wide activity, such as AMRO’s internal committees or task forces, as assigned.
- Lead and conduct training/seminars/workshops to disseminate knowledge to AMRO staff and external stakeholders.
- Perform any other duty as may be reasonably required in furtherance of AMRO’s overall goals.
The candidate should possess:
- A postgraduate degree in the field of economics, finance, or related fields, from a reputable university, with a keen interest in data management; a PhD degree would be advantageous.
- Strong analytical ability and capacity to conduct rigorous macro-financial research; knowledge of economic, market, and policy developments in Asian economies would be a big plus.
- Previous experience working for an international organization, official sector agency, and/or in financial markets would be viewed favourably; experience with multilateral and bilateral surveillance would be a major advantage.
- Hands-on knowledge of core third-party economics and finance databases, such as Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics, Refinitiv (Datastream), is a must; familiarity with more specialized databases such as Bankfocus, Orbis, IHS Markit Global Trade Atlas would be a huge plus.
- High proficiency in software applications, such as Microsoft Office, and in programming languages such as R, Python, or Matlab, as well as econometric packages, such as Stata and/or EViews.
- Strong motivation and initiative in keeping up with the latest macro-financial research techniques; be results oriented and accountable for the accuracy of both data and research outputs.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to interact effectively with staff and officials of diverse cultural backgrounds at all levels.
- High proficiency in written and spoken English.
