Dr. Chalongphob Sussangkarn is currently Distinguished Fellow of the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), a private non-profit policy research institute based in Bangkok. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree through Ph.D. in economics from Cambridge University, UK. After obtaining his Ph.D., he taught in the department of economics of the University of California, Berkeley for two years (1977-79), then worked at the research department of the World Bank in Washington D.C. for six years (1979-1985). He returned to Thailand to join TDRI in 1985. Dr. Chalongphob was appointed President of TDRI in 1996, a post he held until he was appointed Thailand’s Minister of Finance in March 2007. After ending his duties as Minister of Finance in February 2008, he rejoined TDRI.
Dr. Chalongphob was a member of the Advisory Panel of AMRO for four years between 2011 and 2015, and chaired the Panel for two years during that period. Currently, Dr. Chalongphob sits on the advisory panel of a number of journals, such as the Asian Economic Policy Review (Japan Center for Economic Research), and the Asian Economic Papers (MIT Press). In 2004, Dr. Chalongphob was awarded the National Outstanding Researcher Award for Economics from the National Research Council of Thailand.
